A man on a bicycle has chased two teenagers who allegedly robbed a 98-year-old Waikato woman of her purse after she went out to buy Christmas mince pies, police say.
Morrinsville police are praising the response of members of the public following the "cowardly" incident on Tuesday morning. The woman had gone down to the local supermarket to buy some Christmas mince pies and was followed home by two 16-year-old boys, said Sergeant Mark Toomey.
"When she got to her home... she tucked her purse under her arm and went to check her mail box. As she bent over the offenders struck, grabbing her purse running down the road."
Sgt Toomey said a number of people saw the woman in distress and went to check what was wrong.
"When they found out what had happened that was it, one 48-year-old man pursued the offenders on his pushbike and apprehended one offender while others relayed descriptions and direction of travel to responding police via the 111 phone service."
Sgt Toomey said they caught up with both boys.
One offender made a full and frank confession. The other was still being interviewed, he said.
Police had recovered the money allegedly taken but not the purse.
Both boys will appear in Morrinsville Youth Court on theft charges on Friday.
Mr Toomey said police were pleased but not really surprised by the Morrinsville public's reaction.
"I think most people would be appalled at an attack on a 98-year-old woman and want to take action."
